Open House
If anyone out there has a question or questions about Peoria Heights, and what's going on (or should be going on) here, please ask away, and I'll do my best to give a full reply.
Thanks for providing the open house. I'm looking forward to the eventual Heights Trail Head and hiking/biking route that will connect to Rock Island's & IL River Trail. I'm a fairly avid indoor tredmill'r and want to get more out-of-doors/fresh air exercising in. I also recently bought a new mountain bike.
I was on R.I.'s site and found it very informative with a powerpoint tour of Kellar Branch, as well as, a pdf presentation that helped clear up some of my concerns regarding the rail vs trail.

Now knowing that 'a spur of the Union Pacific rail line extending into the Pioneer Park industrial area providing continued rail service to local businesses' has alleviated my worry for manufacturers. So multi-use Hiking/Biking Route, full steam ahead!
The alternative side-by-side rail/trail plan is also feasible though does pose a few issues - or more than a few.
I'm also looking forward to finding out what the actual trail bed might consist of. Doing a little research I see that many trails are covered with a limestone screening. I had never heard of this before ---Easy on the feet and bike tires, I'm hoping..! That's my main concern, having some "give" in the trail bed.
The little research I've done I see trails that say they are "paved", but doesn't say paved with what. Not concrete I hope as it's such a hard surface and hard on the feet and knees. Have also seen "gravel" and "natural surfacing" listed. Natural would be nice, but could get muddy in the rain.
And I understand there are state-of-the-art surfacing for trails, but I haven't seen anything recently or taken the time lately to search it out. (Last year I came upon a trail site about the subject when this was in the forefront of discussion at the Peoria Chronicle and Journal Star but forgot to bookmark it). ( "Kelly" comes to mind for some reason, perhaps it was a trail called Kelly...I'll have to re-look into it ).
I'm sure the Heights will choose wisely. Happy eventual Hiking and Biking!
